ZB guards vans

"Normal" Z/ZL vans weighed 13 tons, in 1971, 20 vans were ballasted with 3 tons of rail bringing their tare weight up to 16 tons. I have been told by older employees that these vans were designed for ballast train working where their extra weight would reduce the possibility of a derailment while the van was being pushed in ballast service. I am unsure of the accuracy of this claim. | ||||||||||||||||||||
